• Coffee, chocolates and the green teas with polyphenols that you are dousing yourself in as healthy are iron absorption inhibitors too.

• Spinach, btw, is not such a great source. Iron from spinach and the other raw juices that you drink (for their nutrient-rich properties) comes in a bound form and it is difficult for the body to absorb iron from these sources. So much for your green- and red-coloured juices. Cooking sabzis helps release the bound vitamins though.

Essentially, stick to traditional diets, regulate your lifestyle and ensure that you are not a victim of nutrition transition. One where you give up on your grandmom’s diet and follow the tabloid and fashion mag diet (Western diet is what it is called in scientific literature), and land up with the ‘big mother, small baby’ syndrome; where babies are 3 kgs and lower and mothers have gained up to 25 kgs in pregnancy.
