Huperzine-A Huperzine-A, an alkaloid derived from Standing Half Forward Bendthe Chinese club moss Huperzia serrata, is a strong, specific, reversible acetylcholinesterase AChE inhibitor Standing Half Forward Bendwith additional neuroprotective properties, including cell protection against hydrogen peroxide free radicals, beta-amyloid protein formation, glutamate, and ischemia. It protects mitochondria, reduces oxidative stress, and upregulates nerve growth factor. Huperzine-A is rapidly absorbed, readily penetrates the blood-brain barrier, and has a relatively long duration of AChE inhibitory action. In animal and primate studies it improves learning and memory Tang, 1996; Xu, Zhao, Xu, Shao, & Qin, 1996. Three double-blind controlled trials with more than 450 people and one open trial done in China showed significant benefits in Alzheimer’s disease.
Four trials in vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s using huperzine-A in combination with other medicines, nicergoline a nootropic that protects neurons by inhibition of inflammatory mediators and upregulation of neurotrophic factors by glial cells, and estrogen compounds or mental training showed favorable outcomes. Other trials showed positive outcomes in vascular dementia, traumatic brain injury, age-related memory decline, and schizophrenia Akhondzadeh & Abbasi, 2006; Wang et al., 2006.
