Julia Bradbury The TV Presenter and Walking Fanatic 48 Shares Her Tips For Getting Outside

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO KEEP FIT?

‘Walking has definitely been good for my health, but I think you need to do it in combination with other things. Aside from my big adventures in the countryside, I walk around various London parks twice a week, and also do yoga, gym sessions and play tennis outdoors. When we’re younger, I think we tend to take our health and fitness for granted, but having three young children has been a fantastic motivator for me, and I now make a conscious effort in my older years to keep fit and strong so I can pick up my kids, run with them and roll around in the leaves when they want to.’

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS? ‘

It just gives me such an overall sense of happiness. I love the feeling of breathing in the fresh air and casting my eye out to see beautiful, natural landscapes. Don’t get me wrong I’m still really excited and stimulated by city life, but being surrounded by mountains, rivers and green spaces puts everything into perspective – you realise you’re so much smaller than everything around you, which is very humbling and grounding.

ANY TIPS FOR BUDDING WALKERS?

Tell people where you’re going, and be prepared. Even if it’s gloriously sunny when you set out, the chances of the UK weather turning cold and wet in a few hours are extremely high, whatever the time of year. Also, make sure you know how to read a map (you can’t rely on GPS to guide you in all areas), and take plenty of water and nutritious snacks. WHY IS BEING IN NATURE SO GOOD FOR MENTAL HEALTH?

Living in the city, I think you can become quite conscious of how you look. But when you’re in a forest or climbing a hill, you’re using your body as nature intended, and when you manage a long walk or climb a tree, you feel a different kind of body confidence. Being outside is so therapeutic. I generally don’t listen to music, but use the time to think or mindfully take in the sights, sounds and smells around me. Just seeing greenery lifts me.
