Passionflower Passionflower Passiflora incarnata has been approved by the Komission E, a government agency that closely regulates the quality of herbal supplements in Germany, for treatment of nervous restlessness. Passionflower contains a dihydroflavone, chrysin, which binds to benzodiazepine receptors.
In a DBRPC comparison trial, 36 patients with DSM-IV generalized anxiety disorder Hamilton anxiety scale 14 were given Passiflora extract 45 drops per day plus a placebo tablet, or oxazepam a benzodiazepine 30 mg/day plus placebo drops for four weeks. Although the oxazepam effect was more rapid, Passiflora was as effective in reducing anxiety and caused less impairment in job performance Akhondzadeh, Naghavi, Vazarian, Shayeganpour, Rashidi et al.
