If something has gone wrong with one of your major body systems you are not going to be able to put it right only by learning to relax. This does not mean the same as saying that the relaxation response will not help you to cope with illness – generally speaking, the reverse is true as we see in Chapter 13. Most people have vague ideas that they are at the mercy of their ‘glands’ and that glandular problems are mysterious causes of ill health and mental breakdown. This is in no way true. However, there is one glandular illness that does give symptoms of anxiety and which may seem suitable for relaxation therapy. This is the condition of thyrotoxicosis, and it does not respond to the relaxation response.
