It’s not just cardio workouts that boost your heart. Strength training can offer more heart-health benefits than aerobic activities such as running, suggests new research. Researchers reviewed data from over 4,000 adults from a US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results showed that doing either type of exercise was linked to a 30-70 per cent reduction of cardiovascular risk factors. The link was strongest for younger adults and those doing static exercises – but people who did strength training and aerobic exercise were healthiest overall. Time to hit that circuit class?

Researchers at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio studied the data from 122,000 people using exercise treadmill testing from 1991 to 2014 to see if large amounts of exercise had a bearing on how long a person would live. Participants were split into groups according to their fitness, from low-performance to elite. The results? Cardiorespiratory fitness correlated directly with a reduced risk of long-term mortality (in other words, the fitter you are, the longer you’ll live).
