In a 30-day controlled study of 190 menopausal women Dolphin Yoga Pose, 40 were given an 8 mg estradiol patch HRT, 40 received 500 IU vitamin E Dolphin Yoga Poseper day, and 60 were given Sudarshan Kriya Yoga SKY only. Indicators of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense were measured. Malonic dialdehyde was used as a marker of membrane lipid peroxidation damage to the lipid component of cell membranes by free radicals. Two important antioxidant enzymes were measured: glutathione peroxidase the major antioxidant for neuroprotection and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase.
Significantly greater decreases in serum malonic dialdehyde occurred in the women given SKY than in those given either HRT or vitamin E. Moreover, antioxidant defenses showed significantly greater increases in glutathione peroxidase and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase Geehta, Chitra, Kubera, & Pranathi, 2006. This study suggests that the beneficial effects of SKY practice on oxidative stress and antioxidant activity exceed those of vitamin E and estradiol in menopausal women.
