Psychosomatic symptoms insomnia, headache, and palpitations, vasomotor symptoms sweating, flushing, and dizziness, and sexual desire also improved Grube, Walper, & Wheatley, 1999.
These findings warrant more rigorous study. Flaxseed and wheat germ have been used to relieve hot flushes and night sweats. In a DBRPC trial comparing flaxseed to wheat germ for improvement of lipid profile, bone density, and physical symptoms in menopausal women, both supplements were equally effective in relieving the hot flushes, but neither improved bone mineral density or lipid profile Dodin, Lemay, Jacques, Legare, & Forest, 2005.
Off-Label Use of Psychotropic Medication for Menopausal Hot Flushes For women with severe hot flashes in whom CAM treatments are ineffective, the following psychotropic medications may provide relief: terazosin Hytrin, clonidine Catapres, gabapentin Neurontin, or venlafaxine Effexor.
